Cool photography apps for the iPhone are a dime a dozen, so what is it about Instagram that has made it capture hearts and minds of over a 100,000 users in just a week? Between Camera+, Hipstamatic and several others, how is it that founders Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom finagled their way to seemingly instant popularity? Have they, unlike the others, figured out an effective recipe for success?
I believe the answer to that last question is yes, although Instagram’s initial runaway success is no guarantee for long-term profitability. How and where Mike and Kevin take it from here will decide Instagram’s future, but rather than pontificating over that, I’d like to look at why Instagram is such a hit so far.

One of the best posts I’ve read about this (or any photo) app. Makes me keen to be an active user!

Everyday app lets you create a video of daily photos of yourself

I’m consistently wowed by the creativity of iPhone app developers. Here’s how the Everyday website describes this app:

Take a picture of yourself. Every day. Set reminders. Get into the habit. The more pictures you have, the better your Everyday app will be. Line up your face with an adjustable grid or use an overlay of the last picture you took. Publish to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Flickr. Or have it upload automatically. Make a movie. You’d be surprised how great the effect of a time lapse video of your face can be. Watch yourself change, just like a real person.

Interesting concept, taking the instantaneousness of photo-sharing and cameraphone shots one step further in creating digital traces of ourselves.

Since January, the five star [Plaza in New York] has put iPads in all guest rooms for a multitude of reasons. One of the coolest? The custom app that the iPad runs. Replacing an older touch panel, the new app allows guests to control lights in the room, change their heat and air conditioning systems, order room service, make restaurant reservations, request wake up calls, communicate with the concierge, and even print boarding passes. According to the general manager of the hotel, their previous system, “wasn’t sophisticated enough for what we wanted to do” and they ” chose the iPad because it is a great piece of equipment that is here to stay and won’t disappear tomorrow.”

Talk about cool.

Pocket for iPad
It’s not so much that I want an iPad, but just look at the really gorgeous apps! It’s the apps that get my blood stirring.
I love organizers, calendars, task managers and it takes me days to pick a physical one - there are so many good ones out there. It’s the same challenge with digital organizers, so I did a double-take when I saw this one. Isn’t it just beautiful? And functional?
Makes me want to purchase an iPad, just to be able to use this!

“I have a very simple philosophy: I keep stuff as long as they work. So I still have my old iPod from 2005, and a brand new iPad. I’m perfectly happy just like that, not wondering if newer will be better, just wondering if the tech I own provides what I need.” – del4yo - Is New Tech Better Than Olde Tech?
